| Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! Thought I'd take a quick look at the boards before I unplug all my eletronics and put to higher ground.
This sucks!!! We have a mandatory evacuation and we've got to be out by 6 pm. I've spent the whole day putting away planters, lawn furniture, grills and other crap. My parents are out of state and I had to prepare their house as well. Did I mention this sucks? Just got the pets off to the kennel in another town way from the water. If you don't hear from me in a while it's because we were hit. My husband is taking his laptop with us so maybe I'll be on later.
Gar, be safe.

| Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! Can you believe what didn't happen in the Tampa Bay area? With the path bonnie took to the north east, it seemed odd that Charley was supposed to go north all the way up to Tampa. That trough ahead of the cold front in the gulf is what made Charley head to Florida instead of the states to the west. In the end, it's also what saved the Tampa - St. Pete area from being hit. I'll bet the weather people are never going to hear the end of this one! |

| Re: Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! Yeah, pretty wild huh? I didn't think Charley would come up as high as Tarpon, but I did think it was going to hit around the Skyway bridge or Sarasota, or South St. Pete. Even still, I expected lots of damage here. And we were spared. My heart goes out to all those people in Fort Meyers and Port Charlotte, especially the ones who live in mobile homes.

| Re: Re: Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! I was watching as much local coverage as possible and couldn't understand why most all of the projected models put the storm going to the north or even west. I was on the phone with my brother in California quite a but during this time. He has a masters degree in meteorology and told me he didn't think Charley should come near the Tampa Bay area because of that "trough" in the gulf which made Bonnie take such a sudden right turn. Even so, I still took all the predictions of a direct hit quite seriously. The only local weather person who now appeared to know what he was talking about is Dennis Phillips of channel 28. He seemed to know along that this storm should take that all important right turn. |

| Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! I have a friend who said on evacuation day, Oh isn't this exciting. I just love a storm. I almost decked her. She had no clue of what a huricane can do. She didn't even know her house elevation. I found out for her that she was in zone A...which wasn't rocket science...the Gulf is on one side and a bayou on the other. I was very frustrated with her because she wouldn't leave her house and she had a new born baby. After the storm was over and had hit Port Charlotte, she called all frantic about how lucky we were and how the next time she's leaving.
I hope that more people evacuate in the future. |

| Re: Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! A hurricane is highly unpredictable. The worst one we have had here was Carla, in 1961. It caused massive damage to the coastal areas and was one of the worst hurricanes in US history. It was later calculated that if early evaucation hadn't taken place (this was one of the first, if not the first times this was done) several thousand people would likely have been killed. I saw the devastation firsthand a few days later- we had shrimp boats washed ashore several hundred yards inland. Whole fishing and other piers were simply gone without a trace. Texas City (five miles inland from Galveston) had water over the tops of cars on Main street from the storm surge...

| Re: Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! Um... ok, so I guess you wanna smack me too, then?? *G* I love hurricanes! The power in them just infuses me with energy. We used to play out in them as kids, I went out and played in Andrew (was in CenLa at the time he hit), let the wind whip around and over me. Ok, so I am weird. LOL IF I lived in a coastal flood zone, yes I would leave. No doubt. Yes, I know EXACTLY what a hurricane is capable of. And I miss them. I haven't felt one since Andrew. :( Homesickness sucks. LOL Especially when you miss those things people think you are insane for missing. Jena |

I love snow and cold (reasonably so!) weather. Last time it snowed here was winter 1980-81.
During the terrible winter of 1821-22 (may be '22-'23), it got so cold here that Galveston Bay froze over and people could walk out and back to the island across the ice...

The last time I saw snow was in 1978. I was in high school and it snowed in Florida!!! My brother and I ran out and made snowballs before school and put them in the freezer. We had to be quick about it too, cause it was melting pretty quick...but enough to make a baseball-size snowball! I do remember when I was grade-school age and living in Michigan all the snow we had then. But for a kid it was fun...and I have a bunch of cool "snow" memories...ice fishing, snow mobile riding, sleding, I lived on ice skates, oh, and all the huge snow forts, snowmen and snow angels we made. But as an adult, I would hate to wear all those layers of clothes, shovel the driveway and deal with slush and nasty roads. Arg. I prefer the memories. LOL

| Re: Re: Re: Re: Hurricane Charley ~ Gonna Hit Us !! Getting the KIDS in all that clothes is a bitch, lemme tell you!! Shoveling, well you can pay a kid $5 and they have a ball. The worst by far is DRIVING!!! GAK!! "Oh it's like driving in mud!" is what they told me. BULLSHEET!!! It is NOTHING like mud!! You gotta brake to turn, turn to brake and pray someone doesn't hiut you or you them. Especially here because the crackmonkeys do NOT know how to PLOW THE ROADS!!! *shakes head* Snow sucks. Period. LOL Jena |
