Hamas: new government illegitimate Sun, 17 Jun 2007 19:31:07 |
Salam Fayyad at the podium of the Israel Council on Foreign Relations on November 2005 | The Palestinian Authority chief has sworn in a new emergency cabinet headed by Salam Fayyad, as Hamas calls the new government 'illegitimate.'
The new ministers took the oath of office before Mahmud Abbas in the Presidential Compound in Ramallah, the occupied West Bank, on Sunday.
The 55-year-old Fayyad, a former employee of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, is widely respected in the West for his pro-Western stance.
The new cabinet is composed of 11 other ministers in addition to Fayyad.
Abbas appointed the new premier after Hamas seized Fatah's Security Force Headquarters in the Gaza Strip last week for what Hamas called as corruption and widespread collaboration with Israeli intelligence apparatus against the elected Hamas government.
"This government is illegitimate," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zouhri told AFP.
"The only legitimacy it can pride itself on is the acknowledgment of the American administration and the Israeli occupation. "
Abbas has branded Hamas's takeover of the Gaza Strip a coup and sacked Prime Minister Ismail Haniya.
The United States and other world powers including the European Union, have said they support Abbas and will back his new prime minister. A Palestinian official said that Washington had promised to resume economic aid to the new cabinet.
US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said Friday that the United States had "great confidence" in Fayyad.

Probably British- certainly NOT SAS (they are a LOT smarter than that)- the Brits developed this silly a** "Belfast carry" for weapons in Northern Ireland so they didn't look too threatening while on patrol. It is a sure recipe for getting killed in actual combat as by the time you bring the weapon up to shoulder against gravity, your opponent who has his at the ancient "port arms" carry will already have brought his down and blasted you. Note the blue tie and the white shirt. "The 55-year-old Fayyad, a former employee of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, is widely respected in the West for his pro-Western stance." A whore by any other name is still a whore.
